The Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Aspire program can help to create the skills that adult learners need to be employed or achieve higher education or training. If you are Ohioans who have less than a 12th grade education or the equivalent and who are beyond 16 years old.
For more than 50 years, the Aspire program has been very successful in Ohio. The Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) believes that greater outreach and a fresh appeal is needed to adults’ desires for personal and professional success.
In the Ohio University, they have opened up virtual classes and online distance ed. If you are current students, you are able to contact your instructor for more information. However, if you are a new participant and you are interested in basic skills or getting your GED, you are able to register through this link here. Aspire Classes in the Southern State Community College
Aspire classes are offered by the Adult Opportunity Center (AOC) of the Southern State Community College. These classes are available on each campusand at some off-campus locations. It is free to anyone who is at least 16 years old. You will also be provided with all books and materials and there are no fees which will be charged for instruction.
The classes are scheduled in the morning, afternoon and evening with fully qualified instructors present at each site. Some kinds of services are offered such as:
- Adult literacy
- College refresher/readiness courses
- GED preparation and it includes practice testing (it is only offered at the GED Testing Center)
- Nursing program preparation
- Reading, writing and math improvement
- Workforce education
After assessment, you will work with the Aspire staff to build an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) to help in defining goals and developing activities. ILPs are created to help you in meeting your own educational or career objectives.
Aspire Program in the Apollo Career Center
The aspire program in the Apollo Career Center is free for adult learners at different locations in Auglaize, Allen, Putnam, Mercer, Van Wert, and Paulding counties. With this program, you are able to earn a High School Equivalence (HSE) or High School Diploma; refresh academic skills in math, reading or language; prepare for an industry credential program in Apollo’s Adult Education Programs; and build career skills to get an in-demand job or retain your current job.
Aspire classes take place at Apollo on Tuesday/ Wednesday/ Thursday at 9 am – noon, 12:30 – 3:00 pm and 6:00 – 9:00 pm. You will be required to attend the 3-day orientation for getting into the program. It is important for you to bring your photo ID and make sure to arrive on time to orientation.
