In this season of football, the Roadrunners are 8-2 all time in season openers which also include 5-2 on the road. They also welcome back 70 lettermen which include 21 starters and both kickers from last year’s squad which went 7-5 and created the program’s second bowl appearance.

Its 11th season will mark UTSA’s first meeting with a team from the Big Ten Conference. It is reported that from UTSA’s 112-man roster, 87 (78%) are from the state of Texas. Well, the football game on Saturday will be broadcasted by Big Ten Network, which marks the 98th straight UTSA game to be broadcast.

On Saturday September 4, 2021, UTSA against Illinois (I-0). In this case, the kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Well, Roadrunners and Fighting Illini will be meeting for the first time on the gridiron. However, it will be UTSA’s first fight with teams from the Top Ten.

As a throwback, UTSA has won at least eight of its 10 previous season openers previously since the inaugural 2011 campaign. UTSA also won each of its first lid-lifters before suffering a 42-32 defeat at Arizona in 2015.

Afterwards, the roadrunners bounced back to win their 2016 opener against Alabama State, 26-13, before making up a season-opening winning streak with a 17-10 win against Baylor a year later. In the program’s inaugural game held on September 3, 2011, the roadrunners downed Northeastern State at the Alamodome by a score of 31-3 and following years saw UTSA open the fall on the road.

The University of Texas at San Antonio reached its first-ever Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). This university also picked up the road victory with a come-from-behind 33-31 victory at South Alabama on September 1. 2012.

On August 31 in their 2013 opener, the Birds defeated New Mexico by a 21-13 count. The next year saw them stun Houston by a 27 – 7 count on August 29 in the first-ever game held at TDECU Stadium.
