What are Ego, Id and Superego?

Freud in his structural model of personality divides the personality into three parts. The id, the ego and the superego are those three parts. What are the differences among these terms? The id is defined as the unconscious part which is the cauldron of raw drives such as for aggression and sex. How about the ego? It is defined as the rational and reasonable part of personality and it has conscious and unconscious elements. The function of ego is to maintain contact with the outside world to keep the individual in touch with society, and to do this it mediates between the conflicting tendencies of the id and the superego. Now, how about the superego? It is a person’s conscience, which develops early in life and it is learned from parents, teachers and others. Similar to ego, there are conscious and unconscious elements in the superego. If all three parts of the personality are in dynamic equilibrium, the person is thought to be mentally healthy. Let’s say that the ego is not able to mediate between id and the superego. If so, an imbalance is believed to happen in the form of psychological distress.

Sigmund Freud stated that the ego is part of personality that functions to mediate the demands of the id, the superego and reality. He also gave a description about the id as the most basic part of personality that urges people to fulfill their most primal needs. The superego is the moralistic part of personality that forms later in childhood as a result of upbringing and social influences.
The ego avoids us from acting on our basic urges which are created by the id. However, it also works to get a balance with our moral and idealistic standards which are created by the superego. The ego runs in the preconscious and conscious, but its strong ties to the id means that it also runs in the unconscious.
The ego runs based on the reality principle. It works to fulfill the desires of id which is realistic and socially appropriate. Let’s take an example. Let’s say that there is a person who cuts you off in traffic. So, the ego will avoid you from pursuing the car and physically attacking the driver which is offending. The ego will permit you to see that this response would be unacceptable socially. However, it also permits you to know that there are other more appropriate means of venting your frustration.
Freud wrote a book entitled New Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis published in 1933, and in that book he made a comparison about the relationship between the id and the ego to that of a horse and rider. The horse acts as the id which is a powerful force that offers the energy to propel forward motion. The rider acts as the ego which is the guiding force that directs the power of the id to a goal.
Freud noted that this relationship did not always go as planned. If the situation is less ideal, a rider may find himself simply along for the ride as he permits his horse to go in the direction the animal wants to go.
Anna Freud in her book entitled The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense which was published in 1936 stated that all of the ego’s defenses against the id were done behind the scenes. The defense mechanism is the term of these measures against the id and they are carried out silently and invisibly by the ego.
