Swayam is a program which is created by the Government of India. It is designed to get the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality as explained on the Swayam site. The goal is to take the best teaching learning resources to all. NPTEL is one of the nine National Coordinators of Swayam. What courses are available from NPTEL? Let’s find out the answer.

  • Advanced Dynamics
    This course is by Prof. Anirvan DasGupta. The length of this course is 12 weeks and it was held on October 15 October 2021 to October 24 2021. The categories are mechanical engineering, advanced dynamics and vibration, computational mechanics and advanced mechanics. The intended audience of this course is mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and physics. Prerequisites for this course are undergraduate mechanics, dynamics and engineering mathematics.
  • Advanced Engineering Mathematics
    This course is by Prof. P. N. Agarwal. The category is mathematics and the level is undergraduate. The intended audience is UG and PG students of technical institutional / universities / colleges. In the first week, some materials that are learned are Analytic Functions, Harmonic Functions, Cauchy-Riemann Equations, Harmonic Conjugates and Milne’s Method, Application to the problems of potential flow-II, and Applications to the problems of potential flow-I.
  • Advanced Machining Processes
    This course is by Prof. Manas Das. The duration of this course is 8 weeks. The category of this course is mechanical engineering and the credit points is 2. Some materials that are learned are magnetorheological finishing (MRF), laser beam machining (LBM), abrasive flow finishing (AFF) and its modelling, plasma arc machining (PAM), and electron beam machining (EBM).
  • Aircraft Propulsion
    This course is by Prof. Vinayak N. Kulkarni. The length of the course is 12 weeks and the category of this course is mechanical engineering, propulsion and energy systems. Some materials of this course are aircraft propulsion, ideal and real cycle analysis, real cycles, engine performance and engine components, axial compressors, centrifugal compressors and some more.
  • Algebra – I
    This course is by Prof. S. Viswanath and Prof. Amritanshu Prasad. The duration of this course is 12 weeks and the category is mathematics. The intended audience is any interested learners and the prerequisite is BSc-level linear algebra. Some materials which are learned in this course are permutation groups, group axioms, order and conjugacy, subgroups, orbit counting theorem, fixed points, Sylow’s theorems, generators and relations, rings, euclidean domains, ideals and factorization and many more.
  • Analytical Chemistry
    This course is by Prof. Debashis Ray. The category of this course is chemistry and materials characterization. The credit points are 3 and the level is undergraduate. Some materials in this course are chemicals and materials analysis methods, role of analytical chemistry and techniques, chemical equilibria and basis of chemical analysis, thermal methods – I, thermal methods – II, and many more.
  • Applied Linguistics
    This course is by Prof. Rajesh Kumar. The category of this course is humanities and social sciences. Some materials in this course are introduction to language, structure of language, language and society, first language acquisition, second language acquisition, language and cognition, direct method, audio-lingual method, computer assisted language teaching, language learning and errors, critical period hypothesis, cohesion and coherence and many more.
  • Big Data Computing
    This course is by Prof. Rajiv Misra. The category of this course is computer science and engineering. The prerequisites of this course are data structure and algorithms, computer architecture, operating system, and database management systems. Some materials in this course are introduction to big data, introduction to enabling technologies for big data, introduction to big data platforms and many more.


What is NPTEL? According to Swayam website, it is the abbreviation of National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning where this is a project of MHRD that is created by seven Indian Institutes of Technology including Bombay, Kanpur, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Roorkee) together with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2003. This project is aimed to provide quality education to people who are interested in learning from the IITs. The main purpose of this project was to make web and video courses in all major branches of engineering and physical sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and management courses at the postgraduate level.
