In Medicine, externship may refer to a visiting physician who is not part of the regular staff in a hospital or clinic. When Is Vet Assistant Externship Started?
The first externship will start in semester 2. You will focus on skills related to the office procedures and routine small animal procedures which should be performed at a companion animal general practice.
Then, the second externship will start in semester 4 which focuses on advanced small animal procedures, large animal and small mammal skills as well as radiology. You probably will need more than one externship site in order to complete all skills with required species.
Both externships really require you to get an interesting experience as a veterinary technician under the supervision of an AVMA graduate who is a credentialed veterinary technician or certified veterinarian.
What Are the Requirements for Vet Assistant Externship?
In order to be approved to begin externships, you should have health insurance. you have to submit proof with completed approval paperwork. However, a rabies vaccine is not required as requirements, but you need to sign a waiver stating that you understand the risk and agree not to work with patients of unknown vaccine status. That’s because Penn Foster will not provide the Rabies vaccine to students.
Additionally, your paperwork will be provided partway through your externship. In this case, Penn Foster will not send this paperwork out early to individual students due to the details that can go through revisions. What Are the Advantages of Externships for Vet Assistant Students?
Because of the short duration, the students can easily complete their externships during a student’s summer and spring breaks. The externships are commonly viewed as job shadowing as the externs are closely supervised by employee volunteers who agree to guide them day-to-day in the company, organization, or also hospital/clinic (for vet assistant student).
Of course, the job shadowing experience will allow them to apply their coursework learning to real life settings. However, the externships can offer samples of career possibilities as a chance for students to observe and ask the questions.
