Building and Ground Workers
The tasks of the building and grounds workers include cleaning and maintaining in the assigned area. They have to clean and polish the floors of the school buildings, as well as scrubbing the walls, replacing the light bulbs and changing the soap dispensers, toilet boxes, and space heaters. In addition to the building tasks, they also have grounds tasks, which include sweeping and spraying down the blacktop areas, tennis courts and sidewalks; mowing the lawns; pruning the shrubs; and raising and lowering the flags. School Facilities Attendants
The school facilities attendants are responsible to clean classrooms, bathrooms, water fountains, and locker rooms. They do that all day long. Aside from that, they also need to stock supplies such as toilet paper and paper towels. They are also the ones who will list all the supplies that have to be ordered. Some other tasks include monitoring the bathrooms and the other areas as an effort to reduce the chance of vandalism. In case the vandalism already happened or if they see the inappropriate behavior, it is a must for them to report the case as soon as possible to the security personnel. Besides to the security personnel, they can also report it to the school plant manager.
Job Requirement
Being custodians at LAUSD requires to have a knowledge of cleaning soaps and detergent as well as cleaning and sterilization method. It is needed for them to know and list repair needs and follow both oral and written instructions given to them. For the education requirement, they should have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. In some cases, valid driver’s license might even be needed.
In addition to these requirements, there are specific requirements. For the building and grounds workers, they need to have the ability to lift up to 100 pounds. Their other skills should include the ability to operate machinery such as lawn and floor polishing machines. As for the school facilities attendants, it is a must fir them to have a knowledge of a basic math to do inventories and to lift up to 50 pounds. Employment Selection Process
The ones who meet the qualifications will be placed on the eligibility list of the Substitute Buildings & Grounds Worker. Besides, they will be also required to attend the Buildings & Grounds Worker Hands On Training Program. Those who manage to successfully complete the program will be allowed to join in the assessment that is based on the computer. If this test also can be passed, they will be placed on the ranked eligibility list for the permanent benefited position.
Salary
According to Career Trend, the custodian workers at LAUSD are paid between $12.05 and $14.92 per hour. Actually, it is the data taken in 2014 and everything depends on the experience and time with the district. In the past, Los Angeles Unified School District signed a new contract with Service Employees International Union, Local 99, to increase the minimum salary of many workers, including custodians, from the number mentioned before to $15 per hour. Since July 1, 2016, the pay rise has been introduced by the school district. According to the number one job site called Indeed, the salary for this position as of 2021 is $16.22 per hour.
