Who is the Winner of CFA Institute Research Challenge 2022?
Reportedly, the student team from Northern Illinois University named Global Champions in CFA Institute Research Challenge 2022. CFA Institute named a student team of future investment management professionals of Northern Illinois University at the 16th annual CFA Institute Research Challenge as the winner.
The winning team from Northern Illinois University consisted of three students who are Nicholas Stone, Nolan O’Rear and Paula Veyhle. The team were supported throughout the competition by their faculty adviser Gina Nicolos and industry mentor Ian Long, CFA.
The team surely secured their win as a result of their presentation and purchase recommendation for Motorola Solutions, to a panel of judges that are drawn from the investment industry, here are they:

- Jaime Lazaro, CFA, CEO BBVA Asset Management Mexico and President, CFA Society Mexico

Rules of the CFA Institute Research Challenge
It is known that the global final that was held virtually and aired to an international audience during Alpha Summit Global, reunited student teams that represented the Asia Pacific, Americas, and the Europe, Africa regions and Middle East to compete for the top prize.
The participants of the CFA Institute Research Challenge are actually working in teams and are judged on their ability to analyze and measure a listed stock, present their buy, write a research report, hold or sell recommendation to a panel of distinguished judges that was drawn from leading investment industry organizations.
In this case, teams will be required to consider environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors in their investment analysis and are able to access real-world financial data through Refinitiv Workspace.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge gives students with real-world financial analysis experience, intensive training from investment professionals and hands-on mentoring from university faculty leaders.
Get to Know About the CFA Institute Research Challenge
The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual education competition to test the skills of the university students on investment report writing, equity research and valuation. It works to promote best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hand-on mentoring and intensive training in presentation skills and company analysis.
The participants will receive mentoring from a professional research analyst when they write a professional research report, analyze a publicly traded company and present their research results and recommendations to a high-profile panel of experts.
The points will be awarded to teams on the basis of their investment case, their ability and their poise to answer the questions from the judges. The team will also be sponsored by their local CFA Institute member society or groups of volunteers, each of which hosted country heats of the Challenge previously.
Reportedly, the CFA Institute Research Challenge has increased the number of participating students from some 3,000 participants in 2012, to over 6,400 this year over the past decade. For more information, the global winners from the past three years are:

How Does the CFA Institute Research Challenge Work?
It is known that Local level competitions are organized and judged by CFA Institute society members and volunteers who function as local hosts. Of course, the winning university team from each local competition will advance to the sub-regional competition.
CFA Institute in Asia Pacific, Americas and the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions host the sub-regional, regional and global competitions. Furthermore, the winning teams from each sub-regional competition advance to the regional competition. Well, regional winners will then advance to the Global Final, in which one team emerges as the global champion.
With local competitions occurring throughout the world at various times early in the calendar year, the university teams will start their activities in the fall. Generally, sub-regional, regional competitions and the global final will be held in March, April and May.
The sub-regional round commonly takes place during the month of March. The local winners will get specific instructions for recording their sub-regional presentations after all local competitions have completed. The teams that are advancing from the sub-regionals to the regional semifinals have been announced at the end of March.
