Amoeba Sisters is a YouTube Channel that teaches science showing two amoebas. This channel was created by sisters Sarina Peterson and Brianna Rapini in July 2013. They specialize in teaching biology concepts at the high school level by using illustrated cartoons.
Sarina Peterson is a former program analyst in a large Texas public school district who is known as a self-taught cartoonist. Brianna Rapini is a former high school biology teacher who worked in three different Texas public school districts for a total of 12 years.
Based on their stories, the Amoeba Sisters channel was created as a way to create memorable and short biology videos which could be used in lieu of lengthy lectures so that more time would be available for class discussion, student creation and labs.
The Amoeba Sisters YouTube Channel is intended for high school biology (as Pinky is a former high school biology teacher). In fact, a public survey of more than 26,000 viewers on their YouTube community tab showed about 37% of the responding audience as college/university students when many of the concepts are taught in introductory biology at the college level.
